University residence, shared flat or studio: 2026 rents, Dakar's student neighbourhoods and the steps to rent with peace of mind.

To find housing in Dakar while you study, three solutions exist: a room in a university residence, a room in a shared flat or with a host family on the private market, and a studio. University residence is by far the cheapest, but places are scarce and allocated first according to results and social situation. Most students therefore go through the private market.
As for neighbourhoods, the areas most often cited for a student are Point E, Fann, Amitié, Sacré-Cœur, Liberté, Médina, Fass and Ouakam: they are close to schools and well placed in the city. Fann, between the corniche and Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD), remains the most direct choice for walking to class.
This guide helps you choose between these options, set a realistic budget in CFA francs and avoid the most common mistakes when signing.
At UCAD, residence housing is run by the Centre des œuvres universitaires de Dakar (COUD). Its capacity is about 7,867 beds, spread over 30 pavilions and 3 sites, roughly one bed for every ten students. A room there costs between 3,000 and 4,000 FCFA per month depending on the type of room.
Allocation, called codification, follows two quotas: 70% of places on academic criteria (grades, year passed) and 30% on social criteria. You don't need to hold a scholarship. Foreign students are admitted under special conditions, with a deposit. Applications go through the COUD platform, campuscoud.com.
Keep a fallback solution: in February 2026, UCAD's social campus was closed after clashes. COUD announced the reopening of six social campuses on 26 February 2026, with pavilions B and F staying closed until further notice.

Without a place in residence, you will search the private market. Three options dominate: a room in a shared apartment, a room with a host and a studio, where you have your own bathroom and kitchen. A shared flat reduces rent and bills; a studio offers more quiet for working.
Some schools house their international students themselves. The Dakar Institute of Technology (DIT) publishes its 2026 rates, in apartments close to the school, with shared kitchen and bathroom:
Electricity is included in a flat fee, but there is no air conditioning and the mattress is not provided. These rooms are allocated for twelve months at most, after enrolment and payment of the deposit. These prices give an order of magnitude for a furnished room in a managed shared flat. Ask your own school: it sometimes has a comparable offer.
If you share an apartment with others, plan around the budget of the whole apartment, divided among flatmates. As a guide, an apartment rents for 150,000 to 350,000 FCFA per month in Liberté 6 or Grand Yoff, 150,000 to 400,000 FCFA in Ouakam, 200,000 to 500,000 FCFA in Fann and Fann Résidence, and 250,000 to 600,000 FCFA in Mermoz or Point E. On top of these rents come water, electricity and internet, which you should have specified before signing.
The rent level per square metre gives a good idea of the gap between neighbourhoods. Here are the rental ranges recorded in 2026, in FCFA per square metre per month:
By contrast, Fann Résidence and Fann Mermoz (6,000 to 13,000 FCFA) or the Almadies and Ngor (7,000 to 18,000 FCFA) are upmarket areas, rarely suited to a student budget.
To choose, start from where your classes are. A slightly more expensive home within walking distance can work out cheaper than a room on the outskirts that requires two trips a day.
A French citizen does not need a visa for a stay of less than three months, with a passport valid for more than six months. For a longer stay, such as a year of study, a resident card is mandatory. It is applied for in Senegal, at the prefecture for your place of residence, with the directorate of the Foreigners' Police and Travel Documents.
ECOWAS nationals can stay less than 90 days without a visa; beyond that, they must apply for a student residence card. For other nationalities, a student visa is requested from the Senegalese embassy or consulate, with an admission letter among other documents. Check the rules that apply to your country before you leave.
Plan for a deposit on top of the first rent: it is often counted in months of rent and its amount must appear in black and white in the contract. Ask for a written lease, a receipt for every sum paid and an inventory signed on move-in. Pay nothing before you have visited the home, or had someone you trust visit it.
The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs also recommends checking the reliability of anyone who asks for banking details or for money to be sent, even a small amount. An attractive listing whose owner asks for a deposit from a distance is a warning sign.
The BRT, a network of electric buses on a dedicated lane, links Petersen, near Plateau, to the Guédiawaye prefecture over 18.3 km, serving Grand Dakar, Liberté, Grand Yoff and Parcelles Assainies among others. A trip costs 400 FCFA within a single zone and 500 FCFA for all zones. A monthly "youth" pass exists for under-25s, and since 7 September 2026, pupils and students under 25 can apply for a half-price social fare. Living near a station noticeably reduces your transport budget.
As in any big city, robberies with assault and burglaries can occur by day or night. The ministry reports attacks on pedestrians on the Corniche road at nightfall and recommends not walking in poorly lit streets in the evening. When you visit, look at the lighting on the route to your classes and whether the building has a guard.
From July to October, violent storms can cause a sudden rise in water levels, including in Dakar. If you visit in the dry season, ask whether the street and the ground floor flood in the rainy season.
Organising visits remotely remains the trickiest point for an arriving student. Remoters puts you in touch with a home finder based in Dakar, who searches for rooms or shared flats for you in neighbourhoods suited to your institution, visits them, helps you put the application together and reviews the lease before signing. The first conversation and the quote are free.
