UNIGE Housing Office accommodation, shared flats or private studios: the options, registration dates and rents to expect in Geneva.

For a student at the University of Geneva (UNIGE), there are three ways to find housing near the university buildings: a furnished room or studio managed by the University's Housing Office (BLOG), a place in another student facility accessible through the same portal, or a home on the private market, shared or on your own. As for neighbourhoods, Plainpalais is the student heart, next to university buildings such as Uni Dufour; Les Pâquis and Carouge offer alternatives within tram or bus distance.
Geneva is the tightest market in Switzerland. On 1 June 2026, the canton had only 793 vacant homes, a vacancy rate of 0.31%, according to the Cantonal Statistics Office. BLOG says it itself: the university does not automatically allocate housing, and you need to start looking as soon as you decide to come to Geneva.
Here is how university housing works, what the private market costs, the neighbourhoods to target and the schedule to follow.

BLOG manages nearly 800 student homes, in the form of furnished rooms or studios, at moderate rents. It is the first door to knock on, but registering does not guarantee you will get a home.
Applications go through a registration portal shared by the University of Geneva, the Cité universitaire de Genève and the Résidence universitaire internationale. Students attach a sworn statement of income below CHF 2,500 per month and a certificate of enrolment.
Applications are processed in order of arrival: the first to register has priority. When a home becomes available, the person at the top of the list receives a priority access link valid for 24 working hours, and the booking becomes final after payment of the first month's rent. At the start of each academic year, 30% of vacant homes are reserved for priority exchange students. In practical terms: register as early as possible, as soon as registration opens, and keep an eye on your emails.
BLOG also points to its partners: the Association genevoise pour le logement des apprentis et étudiants (AGLAE) and the "1h par m2" programme, which offers a room in a host's home in exchange for a few hours of help. It also hosts a classified-ads portal for private housing, reminding users that the university does not certify these ads and that rental scams are on the rise.
Outside university housing, expect between CHF 1,200 and CHF 1,800 per month for a studio or a 1.5-room flat, and between CHF 1,800 and CHF 2,600 for a 2.5- to 3-room flat, net rent. Add CHF 100 to CHF 300 of charges. Figures from the Cantonal Statistics Office show the gap between sitting tenants and new arrivals: in 2025, a four-room flat at free-market rent (kitchen counted as a room, as is the custom in Geneva) rented for CHF 1,639 per month on average, but CHF 2,006 for a home allocated to a new tenant within the year. In May 2026, free-market rents had risen by 1.3% over one year, and by 7.9% when the tenant changed.
Sharing remains the most direct way to cut the bill: with two or three people in a 2.5- to 3-room flat, each person's share falls well below the price of a studio. Check who signs the lease and have everyone's share of rent, charges and deposit set out in writing.
Other costs to anticipate: a rental deposit of up to three months' rent, paid into a blocked bank account, third-party liability and household insurance required by most letting agencies, and LAMal health insurance, compulsory for every resident. The reference interest rate, which is the basis for rent adjustments in Switzerland, stayed at 1.25% in September 2026.
Some students settle in neighbouring France, in Annemasse or Saint-Julien-en-Genevois, where rents are lower. In that case, check the travel time, the cost of transport and the consequences for your residence permit and your health insurance.
For the private market, prepare an ID document or a residence permit, proof of income or financial support (scholarship, parents' guarantee), and a recent extract from the Debt Enforcement Office, less than three months old. Letting agencies check that the rent, charges included, does not exceed about a third of net income: a guarantor is often essential for a student. An address in Switzerland is needed to obtain the student residence permit, and every new resident must register with the Cantonal Population and Migration Office (OCPM) within 14 days.
