As a student in Saarbrücken, you have three ways to live: a room or a studio in a Studierendenwerk Saarland residence, a room in a shared flat (WG) on the private market, or an apartment for yourself. The residence is the cheapest: from €252 to €400 per month depending on the building and the type of home. A room in a shared flat generally rents for between €300 and €500 including charges, and a 20 to 35 m² studio for between €400 and €600 excluding charges.

The capital of the Saarland state, a few kilometres from the French border, Saarbrücken is home to Saarland University (Universität des Saarlandes) and htw saar. Its rental market remains one of the most affordable of the major German cities, but residence places are limited and demand is concentrated in the weeks before each semester. It is therefore best to choose your option early and prepare your application before you arrive.

The shared flat (WG): the most common option

In Germany, a WG (Wohngemeinschaft) is an apartment where each student rents their own room and shares the kitchen and bathroom with the others. The Studierendenwerk Saarland points this out on its housing page: these offers may be furnished or not, and they multiply at the start of each semester, online, in the regional press and on the notice boards of institutions and university canteens.

How much does a room in a shared flat cost?

In Saarbrücken, expect generally between €300 and €500 per month including charges for a room in a WG. That is markedly less than the German average: according to the Deutsches Studierendenwerk (September 2026), a student pays on average €510 for a room in a shared flat on the open market, and the MLP Studentenwohnreport 2026 gives €513 for a typical room in the 38 university cities it tracks.

Reading a listing without getting it wrong

  • Kaltmiete or Warmmiete: the advertised rent is often excluding charges (Kaltmiete). The charges (Nebenkosten: heating, water, waste, upkeep) generally add €2 to €3 per m² per month. Always ask for the amount including charges (Warmmiete).
  • Who signs the lease: in some WGs, each flatmate has their own contract; in others, a main tenant sublets the rooms. Check who you are paying the rent and the deposit to.
  • Furnished or not: an empty room means buying a bed and a desk. Do the sums before comparing two offers.

Which neighbourhoods to search?

St. Johann and the Nauwieser Viertel: the lively centre

Around the St. Johanner Markt, this area concentrates bars, restaurants and independent shops. The Nauwieser Viertel is very popular with students and young professionals for its neighbourhood life. Rents there are slightly above the city average, which makes a shared flat more attractive than a studio.

Dudweiler: near the campus, attractive rents

A former town absorbed into the city, Dudweiler is appreciated by students for its proximity to the university campus and its attractive rents. The Studierendenwerk also runs the Guckelsberg residence there.

Malstatt: working-class and accessible

West of the centre, Malstatt is a working-class, multicultural neighbourhood, with some of the most accessible rents in Saarbrücken. A good option for a budget shared flat.

Rotenbühl, Rodenhof and St. Arnual: quiet

Rotenbühl, residential and well served, is home to the htw saar campus; rents there are moderate to high depending on the home. Rodenhof, Hohe Wacht and St. Arnual are quieter residential neighbourhoods with moderate rents, chosen more by families.

Student residences: prices, conditions and steps

The Studierendenwerk Saarland runs several residences in Saarbrücken and Homburg. They are reserved for students enrolled at Saarland University, htw saar, the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste and the Hochschule für Musik. A few examples of monthly rents published in 2026:

  • WOGE, on the university campus: single studio of 21 to 23 m² at €400, double studio of 36 to 39 m² at €800.
  • Waldhausweg: 16 m² studio at €355, room in a shared flat for two from €309 to €356.
  • Guckelsberg (Dudweiler): studio from €306 to €366, room in a shared flat for two from €252 to €337.

The contract requires a deposit of three months' net rent, returned without interest on departure if the room is not damaged. The length of stay is limited to six semesters (eight for programmes ending in a state examination), for lack of enough places. Elsewhere in Germany, the pressure is high: the Deutsches Studierendenwerk counted 106,045 students on the waiting list for a residence place on 15 September 2026. Apply as soon as you are admitted.

If you do not get a place, the Studierendenwerk also lists private residences, such as that of the Evangelische Studierendengemeinde or studioeins, to which you must apply directly. For the 2025 start of term, it had opened a Housing Office for international students, reachable at housing@stw-saar.de: check whether it has been renewed.

The application for a private rental

  • ID, proof of resources (scholarship, parents' guarantee, bank statements) and the Mieterselbstauskunft, the tenant information form.
  • A SCHUFA report if you have one; otherwise, a certificate from your bank can sometimes replace it.
  • The Kaution, capped at three months' rent excluding charges, to be planned for on top of the first rent.

After moving in, the Anmeldung at the Bürgeramt is mandatory within 14 days, with the landlord's certificate (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung). It is a condition for opening a bank account. Finally, never send money before you have viewed the home or had it viewed by someone you trust.
