As a student in Basel, you have three main options: a room in student housing run by an association, a room in a shared flat (WG) on the private market, or a studio just for yourself. The association-run room is the cheapest and the easiest to get from abroad, but places go fast at the start of the semester. The studio offers independence, at a high price. The private shared flat sits between the two.

Demand is strong. The University of Basel had 14,087 students in 2025, about a third of them from abroad, according to the canton's statistical office. And supply is scarce: on 1 June 2026, the vacancy rate was only 0.90% in the Northwestern Switzerland greater region, of which Basel is part, according to the Federal Statistical Office. It is therefore better to start searching as soon as you are admitted.

Shared flat or student housing: comparing the options

The association-run room: WoVe

The Verein für Studentisches Wohnen (WoVe) has rented furnished and unfurnished rooms in Basel and the surrounding area since 1970, in shared flats or shared houses. Eligible are people who are studying full-time at a public institution in the Northwestern Switzerland region, or who start doing so within three months. Two options exist:

  • Furnished room: from three months of rental. After paying a registration and placement fee of CHF 70, you receive the list of available rooms and choose yours; WoVe then draws up the contract. The room, kitchen and common areas are equipped.
  • Unfurnished room in a WG: recommended from one year. After a registration fee of CHF 30, you receive the list of available rooms and contact the shared flats yourself, which choose their new members.

Rents vary with address, size and fittings. As an example, WoVe lists CHF 428 to 630 per month for the rooms on Neuhausstrasse (twelve rooms in three shared flats of four, a temporary occupancy until 31 December 2026) and CHF 603 or 630 at Clarahofweg, heating, utilities and electricity included. A solidarity supplement of CHF 50 per month applies from an income of CHF 2,500 per month. A deposit of at least two months' rent is requested, and the keys are handed over only once it has been paid: from abroad, make the transfer a few days before you arrive. In early October 2026, at the time of our reading, the association stated on its website that it was almost full.

The shared flat on the private market

This is the most common solution when you have no association place. On the market, a two- to three-room apartment rents for CHF 1,800 to 2,800 per month in neighbourhoods like Gundeldingen or St. Johann. For two people, each share is therefore around CHF 900 to 1,400, excluding utilities. Check who signs the lease, how the rent and utilities are split, and what happens if a flatmate leaves.

The studio

A studio gives you your independence, but it costs significantly more than a room, and small flats are in high demand. It is mainly justified for a long stay, in a master's or doctorate, with a budget to match.

The neighbourhoods to look at

Basel is divided between Grossbasel, on the left bank of the Rhine, and Kleinbasel, on the right bank. The tram and bus network covers the whole city, which widens the choice.

Gundeldingen: the most active

"Gundeli" is the neighbourhood where you find the most rental listings. Lively, multicultural and well connected, it attracts students and young professionals with moderate rents.

St. Johann: in transformation

Close to the Rhine and the Novartis campus, St. Johann offers good value for money and a dynamic neighbourhood life.

Kleinbasel: Matthäus, Klybeck and Hirzbrunnen

On the right bank, these neighbourhoods offer the city's most affordable rents. They are solid options for a shared flat on a tight budget.

Bachletten: a varied offer

Residential and mixed, Bachletten ranges from the affordable studio to the large family apartment, and it is well served by trams.

Altstadt and St. Alban: central but expensive

The historic centre and St. Alban, along its canals, are sought after and among the most expensive neighbourhoods. Homes in the Altstadt are often old and small.

Application, procedures and precautions

The application to prepare

  • ID and, for a foreigner, a copy of the residence permit.
  • Proof of enrolment or registration at your institution.
  • Proof of resources: scholarship, income or a guarantor's commitment.
  • For a private lease, a recent extract from the debt enforcement register, almost always requested in Switzerland.
  • Liability insurance that covers damage to the rental, required notably by WoVe.

After moving in

You must register with the Einwohneramt of your municipality within 14 days of arriving, and take out compulsory health insurance (LAMal) within three months. On the private market, the rent deposit is capped at three months' net rent by the Code of Obligations; it is most often placed in a blocked bank account.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Pay no deposit and no rent before you have viewed the property, or had it viewed, and received a written contract.
  • Be wary of a very cheap room in the city centre offered by a landlord who cannot arrange a viewing.
  • Read the notice period: at WoVe, it is generally three months for an unfurnished room and two months for a furnished room, for the end of a month.
  • Do an inventory with photos at move-in, to get your deposit back when you leave.
