As a STAPS (sports science) student at the Université des Antilles, you will attend classes in Guadeloupe on the Fouillole campus, in Pointe-à-Pitre. The university brings together the faculty of physical and sports science and technology (STAPS) there, alongside the faculties of natural sciences, law and economics, and health. Your housing search therefore starts from a fixed point: Pointe-à-Pitre and the surrounding municipalities.

You have three options: a room in a Crous Antilles et Guyane university residence, the cheapest but allocated first to scholarship students; a private rental, a studio or T1, in Pointe-à-Pitre, Les Abymes or Le Gosier; or a shared flat to split a larger rent. The key, in every case, is to start early: the Crous housing application goes through the Dossier social étudiant, to be submitted in the spring before the academic year begins.

This guide details each option, the rents observed, the municipalities to look at from Fouillole, housing aid and the lease rules to know before you sign.

Option 1: a room in a Crous university residence

Crous Antilles et Guyane manages several residences on the Fouillole campus, as well as one in the centre of Pointe-à-Pitre and another at Camp Jacob, in Saint-Claude, on the university's other Guadeloupe campus. For a STAPS student, Fouillole is the most practical choice: you live on the campus where your faculty is.

The residence listings published by Crous mostly describe furnished rooms with a shared kitchen on the landing. Crous manages residences on the Fouillole campus and nearby, and publishes their rents on its website: check the current year's rate before you work out your budget.

How to apply

You apply for a Crous residence through the Dossier social étudiant (DSE) on messervices.etudiant.gouv.fr, the same file as the means-tested grant. For the 2026-2027 year, the campaign ran from 2 March to 31 May 2026, and complete applications processed before 31 May were given priority for housing allocation. You don't need to know your final course: you can list up to six study choices and change them later. If you're aiming for a STAPS bachelor's degree at the start of the next academic year, submit your DSE at the same time as your Parcoursup choices, without waiting for your results.

Places are limited and reserved first for grant holders. Always have a fallback in the private market.

Option 2: a studio or a T1 in the private market

Outside Crous, most students rent a studio or a T1. According to the 2025 rent map published by the Housing Ministry, the advertised rent for a one- or two-room apartment in Pointe-à-Pitre is estimated at €18.3 per m² per month, charges included. It is similar in Les Abymes (€18.5) and higher in Le Gosier (€20.4). For a studio of around thirty square metres, that gives a ballpark of €550 per month, charges included.

The ranges recorded for Guadeloupe run from €500 to €900 per month for a studio or T1, and from €700 to €1,500 for a T2, with seaside areas the most expensive. Add electricity, water and internet, which cost more than in mainland France, and check for air conditioning or at least good ventilation.

Option 3: a flatshare

Sharing a T2 or a T3 lets you aim for a larger place at a lower rent per person than a studio. In Guadeloupe, as elsewhere in France, flatsharing is governed by the law of 6 July 1989: a single lease signed by all flatmates, often with a joint liability clause, or one lease per room. Read this clause carefully: with it, each person can be held liable for the whole rent if a flatmate leaves or stops paying.

Put the split of rent, charges and subscriptions in writing from the start, and do the inventory check together.

Where to look from the Fouillole campus

Pointe-à-Pitre

This is the campus town and the one with the most affordable rents in the area for small units. The centre is dense, close to shops, the port and the university: the simplest option if you don't have a car.

Les Abymes and Baie-Mahault

Residential towns right next to Pointe-à-Pitre, they offer a varied rental supply, with rents per square metre in Les Abymes close to those of Pointe-à-Pitre. Check the bus service to Fouillole before signing.

Le Gosier

Popular for its beaches and the Bas-du-Fort area, Le Gosier is more expensive. It suits a flatshare that accepts a higher budget in exchange for a seaside setting.

The transport question

In Guadeloupe, a car is still very useful, because the bus network doesn't cover the whole archipelago conveniently. If you don't have a vehicle, choose a place within walking distance of the campus or on a direct bus line: your sports training hours, sometimes early in the morning or in the evening, make long journeys a burden.

Housing aid

  • CAF housing aid: a student tenant can receive the APL, including in a university residence. It applies in the overseas departments under specific conditions: run a simulation on the CAF website before signing.
  • Means-tested grant: applied for through the same DSE as Crous housing. Being a grant holder also gives you priority for a room in a residence.
  • Non-EU international students: since 1 July 2026, the APL is open to holders of a student residence permit only in certain cases, notably if they receive a means-tested grant.

Lease, deposit and pitfalls to avoid

  • Deposit: it cannot exceed one month's rent excluding charges for an unfurnished home, or two months for a furnished one. It must be returned within two months of handing back the keys.
  • Seasonal rental or residential lease: many listings target holidaymakers by the week. Insist on a genuine main-residence lease.
  • Move-in budget: count the first month's rent, the deposit and sometimes agency fees, so two to three months' rent upfront.
  • Viewing: don't pay anything before viewing, either in person or through a trusted contact. Otherwise, ask for a full video tour and check the air conditioning, plumbing and waterproofing.
  • Timing: start searching two to three months before the start of term, as student demand peaks over the summer.
