As a student in Turin, you have three options: a place in a public university residence, a room in a flatshare or a studio just for yourself. The residence is by far the cheapest, but it is reserved for students who meet resource and merit requirements, and places are awarded through a competitive process. For everyone else, a flatshare remains the most common option: according to our city sheet, a room generally rents for between 300 and 450 euros per month, against 400 to 750 euros for a studio depending on the neighborhood.

Turin is still more affordable than Milan or Rome, but rents are rising. According to the idealista portal's index, they rose 5.6% in the third quarter of 2026 and are at an all-time high in the city. Demand, driven by the Università degli Studi di Torino and the Politecnico di Torino, peaks before the start of term.

Here is how public residences work, which neighborhoods to look at and which steps to plan before signing a lease.

EDISU Piemonte university residences

EDISU Piemonte, the regional student support body, manages 67 residences in Piedmont, with about 3,345 beds as of 30 April 2026, most of them in Turin and neighboring towns (Grugliasco, Moncalieri, Beinasco, Orbassano, Nichelino). They offer single, double and triple rooms, apartments and mini-apartments. Rooms have a bathroom with shower, an internet connection and a fridge. Most residences are open eleven months a year and close in August.

Who can apply

For the 2026-2027 year, EDISU put 3,100 beds into the competition, including 2,706 in Turin and its surrounding area. You must be a "fuori sede" student, meaning you live in a municipality from which you cannot reach your place of study in under 60 minutes by public transport, and meet the same conditions as for the scholarship: merit conditions (credits earned) and resource conditions, measured by the ISEE universitario. International students are admitted, with specific rules described in the bando.

What it costs

The residence place is part of the scholarship. For a fuori sede student whose ISEE does not exceed 13,153.12 euros, the 2026-2027 bando provides a bed for eleven months, valued at 2,700 euros, plus a cash sum of 5,396.78 euros. A fuori sede student in the same bracket who rents private housing receives up to 8,096.78 euros, provided they declare a rented home. A full meal in EDISU canteens costs 3 euros for the first bracket.

The calendar

The application for a place is made at the same time as the scholarship application, online. For 2026-2027, the deadline was 4 September 2026 at noon. A foreign student without an Italian digital identity (SPID or CIE) must first request a temporary access code, which can take up to six hours to be issued. If you are aiming for the following academic year, watch for the publication of the new bando and plan a fallback: the allocation of the residence is up to EDISU, according to its criteria, even though you can state your preferences.

Neighborhoods to look at for a flatshare

San Salvario: lively and central

Near Porta Nuova station and the Valentino park, San Salvario is a cosmopolitan neighborhood full of bars and restaurants, very popular with students and young professionals. Rents there are mid-range.

Vanchiglia and Vanchiglietta: near Campus Einaudi

Semi-central and booming, these neighborhoods have a young, creative atmosphere. Their proximity to Campus Einaudi and their more affordable rents make them a top address for a flatshare.

Crocetta: near the Politecnico

An elegant residential neighborhood between Porta Nuova and Porta Susa, Crocetta is close to the Politecnico di Torino. Its rents are mid-range to high: with several people, a large apartment is still possible there.

Cit Turin, Aurora and the outskirts

Cit Turin, with its Liberty style, offers a good compromise between quiet and transport links. Aurora, in the midst of change, remains affordable. Further out, Barriera di Milano and Mirafiori have the lowest rents in the city and are still well connected by the GTT network: check the travel time to your faculty before you commit. The Quadrilatero Romano, very central and lively in the evening, is more expensive.

In semi-central neighborhoods such as San Salvario, Crocetta or Vanchiglia, a two-room apartment rents for around 700 euros per month and a three-room apartment for between 850 and 900 euros: with two or three people, each person's share stays within the range of a room in a flatshare.

Steps, lease and pitfalls to avoid

  • Get your codice fiscale before searching: this tax number is essential to sign and register a lease. You request it from an Italian consulate or from the Agenzia delle Entrate in Turin.
  • Prepare your application: ID, codice fiscale, proof of resources (scholarship certificate, bank statements) and, often, a guarantor (garante) if you have no income of your own.
  • Choose the right contract: the free-market 4+4 lease is the norm for a long term, the 3+2 with agreed rent (canone concordato) is a little cheaper than the market, and the transitional contract covers justified stays of 6 to 18 months, for example for studies.
  • Check the security deposit: the law caps it at three months' rent.
  • Calculate the real cost: listings often show the rent excluding charges (escluse spese). Building charges and energy can add 50 to 150 euros per month.
  • Require a written inventory (verbale di consegna) with photos, and check that the lease is properly registered with the Agenzia delle Entrate.
  • Don't pay anything before you have viewed, in person or by video, and be wary of listings with no possible viewing.
  • In a flatshare, check who signs the lease and put the split of rent and bills in writing.
