University residence, house-share, room in a private home or studio: a student's options in Luxembourg, their 2026 prices and the pitfalls to avoid.

Finding housing in Luxembourg as a student takes planning ahead and a solid budget. The University of Luxembourg has 33 residences, but warns that it cannot house all its students, and the private market is one of the most expensive in Europe: in Luxembourg City, the average asking rent reached €35.61 per square metre per month in February 2026, according to the figures in our Luxembourg rental guide.
House-sharing, in its various forms, is therefore the most common solution. Furnished rooms now account for about 14% of rental listings, against under 3% in the early 2010s, according to the publication Le Logement en chiffres from the Observatoire de l'habitat and Statec. Here are the options, their prices and the precautions to take.

The University of Luxembourg offers furnished housing to students enrolled full-time in a bachelor's, master's or doctorate, as well as to exchange students. Most of the residences are in the south of the country (Esch-sur-Alzette, Belvaux, Dudelange, Niederkorn, Mondercange, Noertzange, Oberkorn), with a few addresses in Luxembourg City. Several formats exist:
The university asks you to state a minimum monthly budget of €400 for bachelor's, master's or exchange students, and €800 for employed doctoral candidates. You choose neither your residence nor your neighbourhood, and requests exceed capacity, especially in September and February. Submit your request as soon as possible: it can be made up to 12 weeks before the desired move-in date, and leases start on the 1st or the 16th of the month.
The university has set up a partnership with WeConnect, which connects students with hosts who have a spare room. According to Le Quotidien (July 2026), the platform has 2,500 registered students for 160 hosts, of whom 60 are active, with rents generally between €600 and a little over €800 per month.
On the private market, a room in a house-share remains the most affordable option. The studio is another scale altogether: expect €1,500 to €2,500 per month for a studio or a T1 in the centre of Luxembourg City, plus €150 to €400 in charges, according to our guide. Outside the centre and in the south of the country, prices fall, but remain high.
After relative stabilisation in 2024 and early 2025, advertised apartment rents rose 5.8% over one year in the second quarter of 2026, far faster than inflation (2.4%), according to Le Logement en chiffres. Furnished rooms are following the trend: their advertised rents rose 102.6% between 2010 and 2025, faster than those of apartments (83%), and rose a further 4.9% over one year in the second quarter of 2026.
The Ministry of Housing points out that these indicators cover asking rents in listings, for new contracts: rents on existing leases change much more slowly (1.3% over one year according to Statec). For a student arriving, it is indeed the price in listings that counts.
The State rent subsidy requires the applicant to have an income, which excludes most students. A bill tabled in July 2026 aims to open it up to them. It has not been passed to date: do not count on it in your budget.
The choice depends on where you study: check the address of your classes first, the country is small but commutes matter. Public transport has been free across the whole country since 2020, which widens the search area.
Students who are citizens of the European Union can also search in the border regions of France or Belgium. The university specifies, however, that non-European students must live in Luxembourg.
From France or another country, it is hard to view, to check who is really renting out the room and to react fast enough. A Remoters home finder based in Luxembourg can search for you according to where you study and your budget, view homes, check the lease and prepare your application. The first conversation and the quote are free.
