Finding an apartment for three, six or ten months in Strasbourg is possible, as long as you aim for the right contract. For an internship, an assignment, a training course or a semester of study, the mobility lease (1 to 10 months, furnished) is made for you. For an academic year, the 9-month furnished student lease comes close. For a few days or a few weeks, there are short-term furnished rentals and serviced residences.

The difficulty lies in the market. Strasbourg ranks 7th among French cities where renting is tightest, according to the LocService analysis published in April 2026, and 71% of residents are tenants. Students make up 60% of rental applicants, against 36% on average nationally. As a result, small units go quickly, especially before the September start of term.

Why it is harder for just a few months

Many landlords prefer a stable tenant on a lease of a year or more. A rental of a few months means more turnover, more inventories and the risk of a vacant property between two occupants. Listings explicitly open to short stays are therefore fewer, and often furnished.

Tourist rentals do not fill the gap. The City and Eurométropole of Strasbourg have regulated tourist rentals since 2016 and tightened their rules again in December 2025: a property converted into a tourist rental must obtain a change-of-use authorisation, have an energy performance certificate rated between A and E and comply with the building's co-ownership rules. These rules aim to keep housing for residents, which limits the supply of very short stays.

Which contract for a rental of a few months?

The mobility lease: from 1 to 10 months

This is the contract designed for temporary stays. It covers a furnished property and lasts from 1 to 10 months. It is reserved for people who, at the start of the lease, are in vocational training, higher education, an apprenticeship, an internship or civic service, on a job transfer or on a temporary assignment. The landlord may ask for proof (internship agreement, contract, certificate of enrolment).

  • No security deposit: the landlord has no right to ask for one. They may, however, require a guarantor, and you can then use the Visale guarantee, including if you are a student.
  • Duration can be changed only once by amendment, without exceeding 10 months in total. The lease can be neither renewed nor extended.
  • Early departure: you can leave at any time with one month's notice.
  • Charges: they are paid as a flat fee, together with the rent.

The standard furnished lease: 1 year, or 9 months for a student

If you do not meet the conditions for the mobility lease, the furnished lease remains the normal route. It lasts one year, renewed automatically, or 9 months if it is signed with a student, with no renewal. You can give notice at any time with one month's notice, including on a 9-month lease. A one-year lease therefore does not stop you leaving after four or five months, provided you respect that notice period. The security deposit is capped at two months' rent excluding charges for a furnished property, against one month for an unfurnished one.

Stays of a few days or weeks

Under one month, you are outside the residential lease: this is a furnished tourist rental or a stay in a serviced residence. It costs more per month, but is useful for arriving, searching on the spot and viewing properties before signing a mobility lease.

Where to look in Strasbourg

For a stay of a few months, being close to your place of study or work and to the tram matters more than a prestigious address. The most sought-after neighbourhoods:

  • Historic centre, Grande Île and Petite France: the most popular and most expensive area, in high demand among students, young professionals and new arrivals.
  • Krutenau: lively and student-oriented, a short walk from the Grande Île. Strong demand, high rents per square metre.
  • Esplanade: near the university campus, with a large supply of furnished studios and T1s, so well suited to stays of a semester.
  • Orangerie: residential and sought-after, on the edge of the park and close to the European institutions.
  • Neudorf: a large neighbourhood south of the centre, well served by the tram, with often more reasonable rents.
  • Hautepierre, Cronenbourg, Montagne Verte: further from the centre and more affordable.

The right time

Avoid the end of summer if you can: the arrival of the roughly 67,000 students in the urban area increases competition for studios and T1s, which then go within days. For a September start, begin searching several months ahead and keep an application ready to send.

What budget should you plan for?

According to LocService (April 2026), the average rent in Strasbourg is 713 euros including charges for 38 m², or 18.58 euros per square metre, up 4% over one year. By type of housing:

  • room in a host's home: 425 euros for 14 m²;
  • room in a shared flat: 466 euros;
  • studio: 582 euros for 24 m²;
  • T2: 797 euros for 45 m²;
  • T3: 984 euros for 65 m².

These averages apply to all rentals, unfurnished and furnished. Upfront, plan for the first month's rent, home insurance and, depending on the contract, a security deposit (up to two months for a furnished property, none for a mobility lease). If you go through an agency, its fees are capped by law, as Strasbourg is in a high-demand zone.

Your application and the pitfalls to avoid

Prepare a complete application before the first viewing: ID, proof of your situation (internship agreement, assignment contract, certificate of enrolment), proof of income or a guarantor. With the Visale guarantee, the landlord has a free guarantor, which reassures them on a short rental.

  • A mobility lease with no written reason: if the reason, the duration or the reference to the law is missing, it is not a valid mobility lease.
  • A security deposit on a mobility lease: it is prohibited. Refuse it.
  • An incompletely furnished property: the property must include the minimum furniture (bedding, hob, fridge with freezer compartment, crockery, storage). A signed inventory must be attached to the lease.
  • Paying without having viewed: no money before a viewing, in person or by video, and before the lease is signed.
  • Forgetting the condition report: do one at move-in and move-out, backed by dated photos, to get your security deposit back.
