Price per m², rents by type of housing and neighbourhoods: what renting in The Hague costs in 2026 and the rules to know before you sign.

This is about The Hague in the Netherlands (Den Haag), seat of the Dutch government and of many international organisations, not the Norman commune. On the private rental market, the average rent there is around €23 per square metre per month in 2026, according to Omroep West. Across all property types, a home rents for around €2,295 per month on average, with wide gaps depending on size and neighbourhood.
To set a budget, generally expect €950 to €1,300 for a studio, €1,400 to €1,800 for a two-room flat and €1,800 to €3,000 for a three-room flat or larger. Rents keep rising: according to the central statistics bureau (CBS), they rose by 4.4% on average in The Hague as of 1 July 2026. Here is the breakdown by type of housing, the neighbourhoods by budget and the rules to know before you sign.

According to figures from the Pararius portal cited by Omroep West, the average asking rent in the private sector in The Hague was €21.52 per square metre in the fourth quarter of 2025, against €20.50 a year earlier, a 4.7% increase. In March 2026, Omroep West put the average private-sector rent at around €23 per square metre. For comparison, in the same region, Leiden reached €23.77 and Delft €20.54 at the end of 2025, while Zoetermeer stayed at €15.65.
A 50-square-metre apartment at €23 per square metre therefore comes to about €1,150 per month excluding utilities: a useful calculation for quickly judging whether a listing is in line with the market.
These levels apply to the private sector, where most newcomers end up. Social housing is much cheaper, but according to Omroep West, the waiting list in The Hague is about seven years: it is not an option for a quick move.
The CBS measures the rise in rents every year as of 1 July. In 2026, it was 4.4% on average in The Hague, of which 0.6 points came from tenant changes, which allow landlords to raise the rent between two leases. That is a little less than in Rotterdam (4.7%) and a little more than in Amsterdam (4.3%). So expect an annual increase in your rent, regulated depending on the type of contract.
The Centrum, lively and central, has high rents. The Statenkwartier, a diplomatic and cosmopolitan neighbourhood, Scheveningen, by the sea, and Bezuidenhout, well connected and close to the institutions, are in great demand among expats and families. Archipelbuurt and Duinoord, residential with carefully designed architecture, are in the same range. Haagse Hout, green and residential, suits families.
Laakkwartier, close to higher-education institutions, remains more affordable. On the outskirts, Leyenburg, Moerwijk and Ypenburg offer the city's most affordable rents. They are good leads for a first home or a tight budget, as long as you check the travel time to your workplace or place of study.
Since 1 July 2023, the Dutch Good Landlord Practices Act (Wet goed verhuurderschap) protects tenants on several points:
Landlords generally ask for an ID, payslips or an employment contract, and sometimes a guarantor. After you move in, registering with the municipality gets you the BSN number, needed for many procedures. Prepare these documents before viewing: good properties go fast.
In September 2026, Omroep West described fake listings circulating on TikTok, which use the photos and names of existing agencies in The Hague to demand "registration fees" or advance rent for properties that are no longer available. Pay nothing before you have viewed the property and verified the identity of the agency or landlord, by contacting them through their official contact details.
On such a tight market, responsiveness matters as much as budget.
